I am directed by the Marquess of Salisbury to
acknowledge the receipt of your letter 16138 of the
22nd ultimo stating that Mr. Patrick Gamble refuses
to receive his brother and again inquiring whether
the latter can be sent home at the expense of this
Office.
I am to state that if you will inform me in due
course of the time and place of Mr. Richard Gamble's
arrival, arrangements will be made for his reception
and the cost of his journey will be repaid to your
Department.
As Mr. Gamble appears to be an Irishman, he
should if possible be landed in Ireland, in order
that difficulties in connection with his subsequent
transference from England to Ireland may be avoided.
The Under Secretary of State,
Colonial Office.
I am,
Sir,
Your most obedient
humble Servant,
Faucis Bertie
